Designed while working at Living Shelter Design Architects, this DADU (detached accessory dwelling unit) in Seattle allows a growing family to expand their footprint to allow for huge variety of uses: family visits, future rental property, furniture business shop and micro showroom space, and many more. At just under 350 square feet, this small space makes the most of the rear yard by dipping underground to create a sunken patio adjacent to the below grade bedroom / shop space. The main level above has a fully functional kitchen with flexible space for living and dining. A customer designed foldable stair allows access to the sun-filled loft space without sacrificing more floor space for a second stair run.
